Nexus 6P (codenamed Angler [half-dozen]) is an Android smartphone developed and marketed by Google and manufactured by Huawei. It succeeded the Nexus 6 equally the flagship device of the Nexus line of Android devices by Google. Officially unveiled on 29 September 2015 along with the Nexus 5X at the Google Nexus 2015 press event held in San Francisco,[7] information technology was made available for pre-order on the aforementioned solar day in United States, United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland, Ireland, and Nippon.

Significant changes over previous Nexus devices include an all-aluminum based body that is thinner and lighter than the Nexus 6, a rear fingerprint reader chosen Nexus Imprint, a faster octa-core Snapdragon 810 v2.1 organization-on-flake (SoC), an AMOLED display, improve cameras, enhanced LTE connectivity, a reversible USB-C dock connector, and the removal of wireless charging. The Nexus 6P was also the first Nexus device to be available with 128GB of internal storage, as well every bit the start Nexus device to be offered with a gilded color option.

The Nexus 6P served every bit a launch device for Android 6.0 Marshmallow which introduced a refreshed interface, performance and battery life improvements, Google Now on Tap integration, a fine-grained permission model, fingerprint verification, and other new features. On iv October 2016, Google presented its successor, the Google Pixel.[2]

Co-ordinate to Google, the "P" in 6P stands for "premium."[8]

History [edit]

The Nexus 6P is the first Nexus telephone that Google has chosen to co-develop with a Chinese company, Huawei. Images of the device first leaked in September 2015, showing an aluminum design with a raised bar on the top of the device containing a camera.[9]

After the Nexus 6P was formally unveiled on 29 September 2015 at a press consequence at Left Space Studios in San Francisco[7] by Android Engineering VP Dave Burke,[10] It was fabricated available with the 32 GB model starting at a cost of $499.[10]

Significant effort went into improving the design of the Nexus 6P compared to its predecessor, with Google exercising a considerable amount of design influence.[11] Google engineers mention that an effort was made to improve the ergonomics of i-handed employ of the phone by shrinking the screen to 5.seven inches, and a atypical bump on the Nexus vi was changed to a horizontal strip in club to avert the potential of the telephone spinning when lying on a flat surface.[eleven] There was push back on certain design elements, notably the centering of the reversible USB-C charging port.[xi] Huawei VP of R&D described the Nexus 6P as a dream project, despite the challenges including the short development cycle, technological complexities in introducing a telephone with the LTE bands to target the global market, and the design difficulties in an all-aluminum phone.[12]

In October 2016, Google removed the Nexus 6P from the online Google Store.[1] Consequently, Google updated its support pages[13] indicating that:

  • Android version updates for the Nexus 6P are not guaranteed subsequently September 2017 .
  • Security updates for the Nexus 6P are not guaranteed later on November 2018.

In April 2019, Google and Huawei agreed to compensate owners of a faulty device with up to $400. This stems from a lawsuit filed past 6P owners over a bootlooping outcome that acquired devices to shut downwards randomly.[14]

Specifications [edit]

Hardware [edit]

The Nexus 6P features an octa-core Snapdragon 810 v2.one organization-on-chip (SoC) with four ARM Cortex-A57 cores at 1.95 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A53 cores at 1.55 GHz in a big.Piffling architecture. The SoC includes an Adreno 430 GPU including support upwardly to OpenGL ES 3.1.

The Nexus 6P has 3 GB of LPDDR4 RAM, which has lower energy consumption compared to the LPDDR3 utilized in the Nexus 6. Available storage sizes include options of 32, 64, or 128 GB of internal storage.[15] The storage used is Samsung-manufactured eMMC 5.0 multi-level cell NAND flash fabricated at 10 nm.[sixteen] [17]

Similar to the previous Nexus vi, the Nexus 6P as well uses an AMOLED display manufactured past Samsung. The screen has a Broad Quad HD (2560 × 1440) resolution at 518ppi. It has a reduced screen size of 5.vii inches (140 mm) which contributes to improved accessibility.[eighteen] The AMOLED screen used is the aforementioned generation just lower binned compared to those used in the Samsung Milky way Annotation 5, the latest available as of the time of release.[eleven] Benchmarks conducted by AnandTech indicates that this results in a screen power efficiency that is in-between that of the Note 5 and Note 4.[nineteen] It was found that the phone contains a sRGB mode in "Developer Options" that increased colour accuracy by lowering saturation.

The battery has a 3450mAh capacity and uses a USB-C connector for charging.[20]

The Nexus 6P was available in iv dissimilar colors: Aluminum, Graphite, Frost, or Gold.[21] [22]

Software [edit]

The phone arrives running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Compared to its predecessor Android five.x Lollipop, the most significant changes include a new permissions architecture that allows for fine-grained control of app permissions instead of bulk permission granting during app install, and Google Now on Tap, an ability to perform a Google search based on the information currently displayed by holding down on the habitation push.

Due to the popularity of fingerprint based authentication, at that place is now back up for an official fingerprint API that allows users to unlock their phones and perform app purchases in Google Play. Android 6.0 Marshmallow too allows website owners to set a preferred app to open up their links in, and allows users greater control over this beliefs. Sharing has been improved with a feature called "Straight Share", which allows data to be sent to a contact direct, rather than to a tertiary-party app outset. On screen volume controls take as well been simplified, with more all-encompassing control exposed via a tap. Text selection has been redesigned to show a floating toolbar adjacent to the highlighted text, replacing the actionbar which existed on the superlative of the screen in previous versions of Android.

Android six.0 Marshmallow includes a battery life enhancing characteristic called "Doze Mode" that suspends network access, disables sync and scheduled jobs for suspended apps during periods when the telephone is inactive.

In December 2015, Google released Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for the Nexus 6P, amidst other devices.[23] [24]

Google released Android seven.0 Nougat for the Nexus 6P, too as several other devices, on 22 August 2016.[25]

Google released Android 7.1.1 Nougat for the Nexus 6P (among other devices) in December 2016.[26] [27] Amid other changes, this update brought some features to the Nexus 6P that had been previously sectional to the Pixel and Pixel Twoscore phones.[28]

Google released Android eight.0 Oreo for the Nexus 6P, among other devices, in August 2017.[29] Android 8.1 Oreo was released for the Nexus 6P, likewise every bit another devices, on five December 2017.[30] In that location will be no future updates for the Nexus 6P.[31]

Sensors [edit]

The Nexus 6P has a rear facing Sony Exmor IMX377 sensor with f/two.0 aperture, that can have 12.3-megapixel ( 4032 × 3024 ) photos. Its large pixel size of 1.55µm assists photography in low calorie-free conditions. It is capable of recording video at 4K resolution, as well every bit slow-movement 720p video capture at 240fps.[32] The front end facing camera has a Sony Exmor IMX179 8.08 megapixel sensor with an f/two.4 aperture lens. The IMX179 was previously used in the rear camera of the Nexus 5.[33]

The dorsum of the phone includes a round fingerprint recognition sensor branded Nexus Banner beneath the camera. Information technology is based on the low power FPC1025[34] sensor developed past Fingerprint Cards AB that tin read dry or wet fingerprints in 360°, with a resolution of 508 dots per inch.[35]

A TMD27723 digital ambient light and proximity sensor from ams AG is nowadays on the front of the device.[36] Internally, in that location is a Bosch Sensortec BMI160 inertial measurement unit with an accelerometer and gyroscope, a Bosch BMM150 geomagnetic sensor, and a Bosch BMP280 barometric pressure sensor.[36]

In order to save power, Google has introduced what information technology calls an 'Android Sensor Hub'. This is a low-power secondary processor whose purpose is to monitor the device'due south movement past connecting direct to the accelerometer, gyroscope, fingerprint reader, and camera's sensors. This scrap runs advanced action-recognition algorithms that allows information technology to interpret activities and gestures independently of the main processor. The main CPU need only exist engaged when something happens that requires more attention. The Sensor Hub recognizes when the device has been picked upwardly and will automatically display notifications in a low-power white-on-blackness text until the screen has been properly activated. Additionally, the Sensor Hub stack also supports hardware sensor batching, a feature introduced in KitKat that permits sensors for a short catamenia of time to delay handing off non-critical information to the operating organization – as opposed to sending a constant stream of information to the CPU that results in the use of more power. Sensor batching has been used in step counters and therefore does not require the principal processor to constantly remain awake equally each step is measured.[37] [38]

Design [edit]

Rear view, showing "visor" and fingerprint sensor

The telephone is the first in the Nexus lineup with an "all-metal body" (even so contains some plastic parts).[39] Color choices include aluminium, graphite, frost, and gold (available in Japan,[40] [41] Bharat [42] and the US[43]).

The Nexus 6P has dimensions of 159.3 mm × 77.8 mm × 7.3 mm (6.27 in × 3.06 in × 0.29 in). Compared to the Nexus 6, which is 159.3 mm × 82.9 mm × x.1 mm (6.27 in × three.26 in × 0.40 in), the Nexus 6P is both thinner and less wide than the Nexus 6. With a mass of 178g, the Nexus 6P is also 6 grams lighter than the Nexus 6.

The screen is protected past a console of Gorilla Glass iv, while the back and sides are aeronautical-course anodized aluminum.[44] There is a rear crash-land that spans the width of the phone that houses the camera sensor, LED flash, light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation auto focus, NFC coil, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular antennas.[45] Internally this bump was called a "visor".[46]

Reception [edit]

The Nexus 6P received generally positive reviews. Ars Technica termed the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P "the truthful flagships of the Android ecosystem" and noted the "few to no compromises"; with further praise for the 6P for being only slightly more expensive than the 5X while having a more than premium metal body and higher specs.[51] The Verge considers the Nexus 6P as "the best" Android phone with "cute hardware and a camera that tin can finally compete".[52] Anandtech praised the photographic camera as a "loftier-end performer", just was critical of the price outside North America and Europe.[53] Wired chosen the Nexus 6P "the best hardware Google (and its partner Huawei) tin can make, and the best software, all in a single slick package", applauded the "ridiculously fast" fingerprint recognition, the "ultra-fast charging", and chosen it the "best smartphone camera".[18]

Compared to the preceding Nexus 6, the Nexus 6P lacks optical epitome stabilization and water resistance, also as wireless charging.[54]

iFixit gave the Nexus 6P a 2 out of 10 in terms of repairability, praising the solid construction which improved durability, only mentions that it is "very difficult" to open up the device without dissentious the glass camera cover due to the unibody design, and panned the difficulty in replacing the screen and the adhesive belongings the rear cover panels and battery in place.[xvi]

Bug [edit]

At that place have been anecdotal claims of the rear glass encompass of the visor cracking. The cause of this issue is suspected to exist the lack of expansion joints, which makes the glass susceptible to thermal shock when there is a sudden temperature change, like inbound a warm room from common cold exterior.[55] [56] [57] This issue may affect merely a particular batch of handsets and thus only a portion of consumers.[58]

Shortly later on the device was launched, it was reported that the device chassis was susceptible to angle under pressure. While bending under force per unit area is non unique to the Nexus 6P, it was reportedly easier to bend than the iPhone half-dozen Plus.[59] [60] [61]

Some users accept reported Bluetooth problems, manifesting every bit stuttering music when playing to Bluetooth speakers.[62] Google said it is already working on them.[63]

There have been reports of microphone bug that result in weak and spotty vox quality.[64] Google is investigating the issue, and information technology is suspected that the issue is partially acquired by noise cancellation.[65]

Connectivity problems were reported after the launch in Australia by users of the Telstra 4GX (LTE Band 28) network. Issues included occasional drops out from the 4G/4GX network,[66] such every bit when switching from Wifi to 4G/4GX.[67]

The telephone sometimes switches to mural way without a articulate reason, and information technology does not go dorsum to portrait.[68]

When receiving a call in a iii-manner call, the user cannot transport messages.[68]

The initial rollout of the Android 7.0 Nougat software update in September 2016 was temporarily halted after reports of battery bleed amid early updaters. The issue was fixed and the rollout connected.[69]

Form action lawsuit [edit]

There was a known issue where the battery would of a sudden drop to zero.[70] [71] Besides certain sets would get defenseless in a bootloop rendering them useless.[72] Following a class action lawsuit in the United States, Huawei agreed to reimburse owners up to $400 for the issues.[73] A similar class action lawsuit was authorized in the province of Quebec, Canada on 23 March 2018.[74]
